Learn the Handpan: A Beginner's Guide
Chapter 1 of 6 17%

I picked up a handpan about a month ago. No musical background. No idea what I was doing.

Within a week, I was making sounds that genuinely surprised me. Not because I was talented — but because the handpan is one of those rare instruments that sounds beautiful almost immediately.

That's both its magic and its trap.

It's easy to sound good. It's hard to sound intentional.

This guide is everything I've learned so far — from someone who's still early in the journey. I'm not a teacher. I'm a student who takes notes.

Why I'm writing this as a beginner

Most handpan guides are written by people who've been playing for years. They've forgotten what it feels like to hold one for the first time and not know where to start. I haven't forgotten yet. That perspective is useful.

Who This Guide Is For

  • Complete beginners who've never touched a handpan
  • People considering buying one and want to make the right choice
  • New players in their first few months looking for structure

If you're already playing comfortably, this guide might be too basic. But if you're starting from zero — this is for you.

What You'll Learn

  1. What a handpan actually is — history, how it works, why it sounds the way it does
  2. How to choose your first one — scales, materials, prices, and avoiding scams
  3. Basic technique — how to strike, where to hit, hand positioning
  4. Learning to play — first exercises, building rhythm, your first songs
  5. Going deeper — harmonics, dynamics, and where to go from here

A note on teachers: The best resource I've found so far is Malte Marten (Malten). His teaching style is clear, patient, and focused on feel rather than theory. I'll reference his approach throughout this guide.

Let's start with what this instrument actually is.
