NSC Update #2: The Niche Site Is Revealed & Got Initial Ranking In Google

niche site updateOkay, I have to admit that the challenge is moving pretty slowly and it’s been nearly 2 months since we (Josh and I) publicly launched it.

The reason for this is because we both had so many projects to work on and got distracted a little bit.

Fortunately, I was still able to get the site ready thanks to the help of my excellent writer, Hazel Rabor, from the Philippines.

For this niche site project, I focused on quality content a lot and I’m extremely happy with what we have done so far, and the initial result is great as well!

Without talking any further, let me go ahead and show you the site.

Okay! My Site Is…

 [wpsharely id=”1343″]
Here’s my site: DoubleStrollerCenter.com

As you can tell right from looking at the domain, the target niche for this site is the double stroller niche and the main keyword is best double stroller. I also picked double stroller reviews as secondary keyword to target on the homepage.

Here’s a quick look at the competitor analysis screenshots from Long Tail Pro.

You can clearly see that this main keyword is an easy one with the KC of 30 & several web 2.0 & article-based sites on the top 10 competition. I’m pretty confident to achieve #1 ranking in the next 2 months for this keyword.

The competition for this keyword is pretty similar to the above one and we can even see that there’s one niche website sitting at the top which means we can also achieve that ranking.

Setting Up the Niche Site

For this case study, I decided not to use the help of my virtual assistant on everything. I did the setting up myself and just hired a guy on Odesk to help me add the articles as it’s pretty time consuming.

I have written a very detailed post on how to set up a website with wordpress before so be sure to check it out.

As usual, I used the old version of the Lifestyle child theme as it’ pretty simple and clean with lots of white space.

The logo was made by me with the help of Photoshop and IconFinder.com.

I also did the graphic on the right sidebar. If you have Photoshop and want to use my template, here’s the PSD file.

Honestly, you shouldn’t spend much time on this step as I did because it was pretty time consuming and had us distracted from our initial goal of getting the site running as fast as possible.

Just choose a simple theme, make a simple logo, make some simple graphics and go with what you have.  You can also do the customization later when your site is up and running and (maybe) have generated some profit.

Here’s the list of plugins I used:

  • WordPress SEO by Yoast
  • Easy WP SEO
  • TinyMCE Advanced
  • Related Posts via Categories
  • Q2W3 Fixed Widget
  • Limit Login Attempts
  • Genesis Simple Edits
  • Contact Form 7
  • AA’s Digg Digg Alternative

I also installed Google Analytics and added the site to Google Webmaster Tool. Some people say that we shouldn’t share a lot of information about our sites with Google to prevent the risk of being penalized but I think that’s not true.

Google already knows a lot about every site we create so there’s no reason why we don’t use their helpful and free tools to make our site even better.

Had My Writer Create all the Content (30 Articles)

The ability to create high quality and engaging content is the key to success in building profitable niche website.

And it’s even more important now as Google is continuously improving its algorithm to reward high quality websites while penalizing sites with crappy content.

With the help of my outstanding writer hired through Virtual Staff Finder, I’ve been able to create over 30 high quality 800-word+ review and how-to’s articles for the site including a 4500-word homepage with a huge comparison chart featuring the top 3 products on the market.

I was making things very complicated at first with a big vision for the site but then I realized that the goal is to get the site up in the shortest period of time before I can do anything else to improve it.

That was my biggest mistake on this challenge that made me procrastinate the launch.

So my honest advice for you guys is to launch your website as soon as possible with a minimum amount of articles (10-11 articles with a high quality homepage is far more enough for a new website).

Maybe you have taken a look at my site and are wondering how I made the comparison chart.

Well, it was pure HTML so feel free to copy my code if you like.

I’m also in the process of developing a WordPress plugin that allows users to automatically create beautiful and high-converting comparison chart for Amazon products. Tell me if you’re interested in the comment.

Launched the Site & Started the Link Building Campaign

I launched the site approximately 2 weeks ago. The website didn’t show up for the main keyword in Google yet, but that’s pretty normal and I can wait.

Ranking Update 12/02/2013: The site is ranking #23 for “best double stroller” & #34 for “double stroller reviews”. Here are some graphics:

SerpBook__double_stroller (1)

The main backlinking strategy for this site is to create high quality tiered link building campaigns as described here to achieve high and sustainable ranking.

We can no longer blast thousands of links and get a website ranked in just a few days.

I’ll play the long term game in this challenge so be patient and wait for my results :D.

Total Time & Money Invested

I spent pretty much money on this site as the result of my mistake on trying to create a “perfect” website.

Here’s the list of what I have spent money & my time on:

  • Time invested
    • Keyword Research: 2 hours
    • Setting Up The Site: 4 hours
    • Communication with my Writer and VA: 4 hours
    • Further research & investigation on the topic: 5 hours
      • Total: 15 Hours
  • Money Invested

What’s Next

Now, I’ll continue to focus on growing the traffic for the site and hopefully make a few sales over the next month.

I have very high hopes for this site and with my experience, I would expect the site to make $1000+ a month for me in the next 6 months.

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment below.

Hope you like this update.

  • It’s great to see you are coming back with such a great and detailed journey Tung. Good luck to you. I am planning to start my own journey too and focus 100% on that journey only. I think I have too many options, so I haven’t completed everything yet which is pretty bad. 🙁

  • Congrats on your fast ranking! It took only 2 weeks to rank in 2x, 3x positions. How many sites your PBN have?

What is your future content strategy, beside how to and product review articles?

  • Tung,

Thanks for the update. I am going through a similar process on my site of breaking down niche sites and what is working right now.

I would say absolutely a plugin that does the Amazon comparison chart would be awesome.

I am curious, in a previous article you had mentioned that if the majority of the sites are > PR 4 you would target the keyword. It would appear that the majority of the sites through LTP are =< PR 4.

Second, are you doing all of your linkbuilding internally? I know that you had bought a link package before, wondering if you have your Blog NW set up.

    • Maybe you got my point incorrectly… If the majority of the sites are >PR4, the competition is tough not easy.. Think about it 😀
Yes, I have my own team now and I also offer my link building service here.

  • Hey Tung,

Interesting niche pick. Are you not worried about negative SEO with revealing your niche and URL this early?

Also, I’m interested in your WordPress plugin. TablePress is pretty easy to use already, but I don’t think EazyAzon short codes work in them. Have you used EazyAzon before? It’s amazing and totally worth it

  • Tung,

So excited to see your first update on your niche site challenge. I think the niche is a great niche and believe that your keyword research has served you well. Looking forward to seeing Josh’s site and his update as well.

    Blessings to you!

  • Hi Tung,
great to hear that you still have free time to update us with the challenge. 🙂
what’s the main KW you are targeting on? double stroller?

  • Hi Tung – Great post! I have been waiting for the next post like a lot of your other readers. 🙂

I agree 100% with you about launching with a small amount of content. You probably won’t have many visitors early on, as you know, so you may as well have your content out there. Let Google index it and keep adding content.

A nice table plugin would be great…I would be interested in hearing more about it. I wonder how much the table matters to the conversion rate versus the intent of the visitor.

  • Hello Tung. I was waiting for this update. I really enjoy your cases studies.
    Questions now.
    1. What tool do you use for keyword rank checker? Is it LTP or something online?
    2. It seems an important part was done for a reasonable fee to your VAs. I still have problems finding good VAs at those prices. Maybe because I am looking for french language? Do you have vietnamese moneysites and had same problems with them?
    Keep on the good work.
I have you bookmarked and your help is tremendous!

  • Hey Tung, Nice clean looking site as always. You’re right about keeping it simple and not worrying about putting to much time into design and other things to start with. This is often something that holds me back too if I let it. Best of luck with the project.

  • Hi Tung, great post, looking forward to see how this site project comes along.

I tried to download the Photoshop template and the file in your Dropbox doesn’t seem to have a file extension, my Photoshop couldn’t open it.

The new site looks great. One comment is, the sidebar graphic seems to be displayed twice. I wasn’t sure if that was your intention so thought I’d just let you know.

  • That’s great news Tung seeing you progressing with your site! I am wondering if your “competition” will catch-up :-). By the way, which programm do you use to check your rankings?

  • Thanks Tung I have marked this to read the steps again and the link to the first one again – I am still only working on the layout etc – complete newbie but i’m gettin there… I think
    Thanks for your help

  • Hey site looks great, looking forward to watching your progress! I can’t seem to get the .psd to download for me, anyone else having issues?

  • Hey Tung,

Thanks for sharing all these case studies, it’s really a great help. I just have a question though, normally, how long are you able to make a niche site from keyword research to finally publishing it online?

Do you also follow some sort of schedule of deadline for each step?

  • Hey Tung,

I have been following your site for some time now and decided to start commenting a bit. Great approach btw. I was wondering why people insist in the plugins you mentioned as well – AA’s Digg Digg Alternative and Limit Login Attempts. I switched to Flare and Wordfence quite some time ago.

  • Hi Tung, first of all… great job and good luck with your new niche website.

I’d like to ask you my quick question, I created first niche website. this is the timeline:
    -5th of november, domain purchased
-20th of november, 12 unique articles are up. Design is done, on page SEO is done.
    site is ready.
    – i started some basic blog commenting on relevant blogs on the 25th. (a few comments on related blogs)
    – today,3rd of december, i can see that all the pages are correctly indexed, and I can also see many different keywords (mostly longtail) bringing impressions in google.

My site ranks nowhere for main and secondary keyword (not even at 300+ position), not at all.

Should I just relax and wait?
WHEN do you think I should start to worry about this fact?
competition isn’t strong in the niche, keyword competitiveness of less than 30

  • Nice to see you being consistent Tung. you have a nice team behind you,. content writers and link builders. i hope you making good use of them by making lots of money sites.

I have a quick question tung do you have any other Amazon niche sites privately? if so what income roughly do you normally get each site up to monthly?

And also another question, what university where you at and what were you studying before you dropped out, because i’m currently at university

    • Yes I have a few sites but they’re new so no income yet 😀 But I’d expect avegare $200 per month per site.

I studied Business Administration at National Economics University in Viet Nam 😀

  • Hi,

I have tried to work with a lot of Content Writer, but its very hard to judge exact quality of their work, its very subjective. A lot of time is wasted to review their work, because you have to research yourself.

If you can please to a detailed post on “How to Select the Right Content Writer or Steps/Guide to create high quality content” that will be great.

  • Something doesn’t seem right here Tung. You claim to have sold your dumbbell website back in September on Flippa. However, when you post comments like this on Spencer Hawes’ website, it seriously makes me have doubts about your claims:

Tung posting a comment on Spencer’s site (October 7th):

    “HI Spencer,
It was a shame that my site was hit 🙁 too after you publish my success story.
    However, traffic is climbing back.
I think it’s too soon to make any conclusion and we’d be better off doing nothing for 2-3 weeks to let the dust settle.

I’ll try to recover my site too 😀 ”

Now, you’ve claimed in previous responses on the matter that the new owner of the site has been providing you with updates on how much he/she is making (which would conveniently explain your comments posted on November 19th: “… my dumbbell site sadly has been hit hard and earned only $100 last month”).

However, at this point I’m SERIOUSLY starting to question your claims. Who else makes statements like “I’ll try to recover my site”, over a MONTH after supposedly selling it to a third party?!

I truly hope you take the time to answer what I see as legitimate concerns from your reader base. If this comment get’s deleted by you, I think it’s safe to say we know exactly what’s going on 🙂

  • hey tung Just googled ur keyword and found 3 competing niche sites on the same google page with your website. i hope you are able to tackle the other websites. Just wondering, which hosting company are you using for your niche webbsites?

  • The site looks good! Your service looks very comprehensive. When I have enough cash I’ll give it a try.

For someone who gets your service, what next link building steps do you recommend after that to get to #1?

  • Awesome to see you’re new niche site Tung 😀

I spotted this niche a few months ago, but didn’t like the keyword as it didn’t inspire me at all, and I also thought that the competition is relatively high in terms of quality looking website on this topic.

I hope you crack it though Tung and I’m sure you will 😀 Look forward to seeing you at the top for this this niche. 8|

  • Tung, congrats on your niche site launch. It’s a high quality one. Would be interested in seeing the income growing and sustaining in the future few years if possible.

Did you use the plugin “Q2W3 Fixed Widget” to keep the widget (the promoted item) sticky when you scroll the site?

Keep up the great work and traffic/income reports coming. Thanks!

  • Hi tung i love the way your site looks great job. i have a question about my site. i have someone building links for me and for the past 3 -4 weeks and i dont see my rankings going up. and i don’t see any thing happening with the links??? how do i start seeing process in rankings??

    thank you

  • Hi Tung,

Great article to read here. Tung can you tell me that before you buy sharak link building package from bhw for previous niche site. Do you have any plan to use it again for this site 🙂 just for asking and how much this service is effective and it is necessary to buy each month his service or not.

    2. After recently page rank update my all expire domains which have pr2 before now they have 0 page rank. Now can I still use them for blognetwork or not.

    3. If I build links myself without buying any service then what you recommended means which web 2.0 blogs are best for articles posting which index fast in google and having good authority and after first tier can we blast many web 2.0 with spun contents on tier 1 for indexing. Can you write a detail post on linkbuilding because it is the main part of any site.

    4. Kindly reply with brief details about linkbuilding please.

  • I have more questions Tung,

    1. In previous old post you told that I found a way to auto update web 2.0 blogs, can you share with us about it.

    2. Are high pr comments on different niche sites which links directly to money site good or not.

    Waiting for your reply

  • Hi Tung. Your site looks awesome. Hopefully you can rank it well and make a good profit from it! 🙂 btw i got a question for you. I found one KW, but at the first page there are one website with domain “xxKW.wordpress.com”. some even have xx.blogger.com on first page. Does it shows that this kw has low competition? Others are authority website page like Amazon, Best Buy and Consumer Search and have only one targeted niche site “www.xxkwreviews.net”.

  • Great to read through your achievements so far, well done. I also have the Genesis Lifestyle theme, I really like it. The support at Studiopress is brilliant too.

Just a quick question – I see that you use a static homepage, do you think this is preferable for SEO?

  • Hi Tung,

I checked your backlink distribution on ahrefs, “double stroller reviews” have 60%/total links. So when should we care about being penalized by over-optimized anchor texts? And when should we have to think about diversifying anchor texts?

  • I think this one could be a struggle Tung. Look at the first page results. Massive DA’s and 8 with PA >40. It’s going to be tough to beat those parenting websites.

  • I thought if there are Amazon links on the first page of Google, the competition is tough. Checking your keywords on Long Tail Pro, I saw Amazon links on them. Can you explain that?

  • Glad to see you back Tung my friend. I am working on a 100 website (micro sites) over 12 months for 2014, should start rolling it out soon. It’s nice to see your new link building service. Would like to try that – let’s talk about that on Skype when you are next on. I would like to use your service as part of my huge case study. Do you have an affiliate program, or plan to for it also?

  • Hey Tung Tran!

Excellent niche idea. What theme is that your using for this niche site?

I have been using Spencers theme for my niche sites but I like this one you use.

  • Hi
Do you remember me? I also bought your link building service for my niche site. But it would be better to keep it as secret at this time. I need to learn for SEO techniques for a while. Good new is my site is rank on first page of google for long-tail keyword. But for my primary keyword are still at number 21-30. I need to build more links to this site. Hope you are going well with your site. I’m working on my site too.

  • Hey Tung,

I’m just wondering if you will also be using Adsense on this site? I am using both Amazon and Adsense on my new site. I just started seeing clicks in Adsense this week and the past few days I’ve been getting between $1-$2 per day with only between 8-15 visits per day. I’m not even ranking yet for the keywords I targeted and only have 6 articles on the site.

I also made my first Amazon sale this morning, but until it’s shipped to the customer I won’t know how much I made from it. It took 41 clicks on my Amazon ads to make1 sale though. I’m guessing it’s because some of the long tail that brought those visitors were not really “buyers keywords”.

I see huge potential for my site now that it’s climbing the ranks. When I add a bunch more articles now and start ranking for the keywords I targeted it should be great!

Good luck with your site. I’ll be following closely!

    Lindsay Collins

  • Hi Tung,
    1. I know you have a linkbuilding service but can’t afford it right now. I’ll definitely use it in the future, though, especially if or when your service expands. I’m wondering, if I sign up for your linkbuilding plan, does it cover unlimited number of websites?
    2. About which month will we see initial results of your rankings?

    • Hi Marie,

The package is for one website only.

It totally depends on the competitive but I’d recommend you to stick with us for at least 3 months to see any significant result.

  • Hello

I just wonder which hosting that you host your Cloud living website. My blog hosts with hostgator reseller plan. But I think it’s bit slow. You host is quite fast when compare to my site. Can you suggest your hosting company and plan?

  • Hi Tung,

Great going dude! We all know very well that online entrepreneurs always busy 🙂

However, as a regular follower of your blog I check everyday whether there is any update. Eagerly waiting for your next update. Please update as soon as possible.

Back in August 19, 2013, Ophelie Lechat published an article on flippa blog http://flippa(dot)com/blog/why-micro-niche-sites-no-longer-work/ where she gave some wrong information on micro-niche site. She mentioned your name and blog as an example. I saw you replied accordingly. In the comments section she defined micro niche site as those sites having maximum 5 pages. Here I oppose too. Because fundamentally number of pages of a website doesn’t reflect the authority of the site. Hopefully you will write a comprehensive article on the distinctions between authority site and niche site and how a niche site can become an authority site.

    Cheers! 😀

  • Best of luck! The site looks great. I totally agree that sometimes you just make a logo and go for it – don’t waste time trying to make it perfect. I’m also finding that building long term links will work out better in the long run than using the old tricks of blasting the site with links.

  • Hi Tung, great post! Thanks for revealing everything so everyone may learn… I just read Josh´s post and it is becoming very interesting for us to see how you two are aprouching niche site building. How many articles did you post at the start? 30? or did you start with 10 to 15? What should be the drip feed of them to the site? One per week? two?

  • Hey Tung,

Totally off-topic but I just saw the new design of Cloud Income and loved it! 🙂

Is it a specific Genesis child theme or did you hire a programmer to make certain changes to the original genesis theme?

  • Hi, Tung Tran

You are one of the inspiration for a newcomer who is just jumped in Online business, I have gone through all of your post, I loved it,

I feel Social Signals are also very important for SEO. As Google loves social signals, google+ is best for new website to get some good link juice. I run seo services, after 1st step of onpage optimization, my second step will be setting up social sites for my clients, I personally experienced effect of social signals, I always suggest first Google Plus, whats your opinion on this.

  • Nice work again dude…

Quick question, from where’r your graphics showing information regarding KW position ?

Thanks for showing your work, it’s really appreciated.

    All the best

  • 1. Your niche site has a static HTML front page and a WordPress blog. What do you use to convert that WordPress theme to HTML?
    2. What is your pop up plugin for Cloudliving?

  • Hi Tung,

One question please! I’ve checked on google for “best adjustable dumbbell” and I can see on the firt position one site with many dofollow links (hi PA and DA) but all are in vietnameze language…how long do you think it will be on 1 position?

  • Hi Tung… I put best double stroller in google and I see you and your friend are on page 1. Wow and well done to both of you. Hope you post an update soon.. Gill x

  • Hi there! This post couldn’t be written any better! Reading
through this post reminds me of my previous roommate!
He always kept talking about this. I’ll forward this information to him.
Pretty sure he will have a very good read. Thank you for sharing!
