My Monthly Income & Traffic Report – June 2013

income reportWelcome to my June monthly income & traffic report!

Each month I will be publishing a detailed report that tells you what I’ve done and lessons learned during the previous month. I will transparently show you how my online business is progressing including my income, expenses and traffic throughout my websites.

There are four main reasons that make me do this:

  1. To help me keep track of my own progress.
  2. To push myself to see improvements month after month.
  3. To lead by example by sharing both my wins and failures.
  4. To inspire other people.

Ok. Let’s get straight into this month’s report.

Important Going-Ons In June

Honestly, I spent most of the month traveling and hanging out with my friends. In early June, I went to the South of Viet Nam to meet people in my mastermind group for the first time. We truly had a great time together! Then my birthday came (19th). I spent a whole week celebrating it lol, and actually I just came home yesterday from a 5-day vacation to Cat Ba Island with my family. Well, you know, summer means vacation =)

Due to traveling, I didn’t put much effort on my online business this month. I still have to learn more about how to balance work and play while traveling. Perhaps Matthew Woodward can give me some helpful advices :D.

My Niche Website Project

Started in February 2013, the main goal of this public niche website project is to inspire people and encourage them to take action on the very first steps to build their own online businesses. I’m glad to experience both failure and success in this project as I firmly believe that failure is a good teacher and a good sign of the coming success.

My niche website has been hit by a recent update by Google, but I have no idea why and how to fix it.  So, I decided to leave the site for one month to see what would happen. The main keyword “best adjustable dumbbells” is still holding strong at #1, but the secondary keyword “adjustable dumbbells” dropped from #2 to #36 and other long tail keywords  dropped significantly to page 20+.  I’m still researching on how to recover the site, Ive just added 5 PR backlinks to the homepage. Let’s see what happens next! I really need your help, so if you have any suggestion or advice, please leave it in the comment section or email me at : [email protected]

My niche site got a big drop in traffic, went from over 500 visits per day to just 105 visits per day on average 🙁 As a result, the earning dropped to $583.30, but it’s still a good passive income.

 What is the recover plan?

Well, I have no idea =). I’m not an SEO expert, but I’m willing to learn new thing, and I’m trying to contact some experts to get the answer.

If you want to start your first niche website today, here is the list of useful articles I’ve written:

Cloud Living Journey

This blog is growing bigger and bigger, and I’m getting noticed by the community. That’s great!

I published only 1 post this month, but it’s of very high quality. Check it out:

Crunching The Numbers

Traffic remains steady at 4, 276 ( 142/day). There is no big difference as compared to the last month’s traffic. It’s cool that the % New visits decreases from 55.60 % to 39.83%. That means people are coming back regularly 😀

Most Popular Content

How I Built A Niche Site That Ranked #1 in Google and Made $93.32 in 38 days is still holding the #1 spot while my newest article How To Build a High PR Blog Network and Rank For Anything With Ease breaks in the top 10 quickly. I bet that it will receive lots of attention and would probably claims the #1 spot this month.

Top Traffic Sources

Search traffic was almost doubled from 1,692 visits (56 day)  to 3,210 visits (107/day).

I haven’t put much effort on building backlinks to CLJ so this is amazing!

Income Breakdown

Disclosure: many of the links below are affiliate links that will earn me a commission if you purchase through them. If you do, I absolutely appreciate it and if you have any questions about any of the products or services please let me know!

Also, please note that these are figures from reports from each individual company for the previous month. It does not necessarily reflect the actual payment which, for some of the companies listed below, comes 30 to 60 days later because of potential refunds.

  • Gross Total In June: $1575.12
  •  June Expenses: (Below is what was paid last month. It does not include pro-rated yearly fees. Most are related to new projects under development):
  • Other: $94.86
  • Facebook Ads: $11.97
  • Udemy: $24
  • Odesk: $11.11
  • Long Tail Pro Subscription: $12
  • Namecheap: $1.16
  • Content Creation: $52.08
  • Fiverr: $10
  • VPS: $12.95
  • Proxies: $10
  • Affiliate Passive Commission Course: $7
  • $9.95
  • High PR Domains: $217
  • $9.95
  • Page Speed Mechanics Course: $9.59
  • Total Expenses for June: $494.34
  • Net Total In June: $1080.78
  • Net Total Previous Month: $1640.52

A pretty good month! Finally, I was able to significantly reduce my expenses. As I closed my keyword research service and my niche got hit, my gross total in June was much lower than in May. To be able to reach my goal of making $5000/month by the end of 2013, I’ll have to work harder this month to establish new income streams.

Final Thought

This post was pretty shorter than usual as I really don’t have anything new to talk about 🙁

Firstly i want to say im 18 But in the uk and its great to see someone my age in Internet/affiliate marketing :-).

And also its kind of weird how this website is ranking 2nd page for the term “adjustabel dumbells” 2nd page! with just a title?

Hows your other projects going along, and how are you finding ranking new sites?

lasse - July 5, 2013

hey Tung!
this is really a great blog 😉
I just started out 3 weeks ago to make something like a “niche” site in the classical meaning of this word – using some of your tips and: tadaa! after 2,5 weeks i ranked page one for the main keyword with 8100 exact maches in my language (german) – and now my site is sitting on #2!
what a great sucess!

sicne last week i am trying to adopt the rules of SEO for my “real” Company Website which actually is not doing so well on the search engines for the relevant keywords (compared to real world 😉 – Clients found on the “traditional ways” to us)

well! i just wanted to say thank you for your great blog and the knowledge you are sharing here 😉

Kind regards

    Fran - July 5, 2013

    WOW Lasse,
That’s great! 2.5 weeks for 8100 searches. Are those exact match? How many visitors are you seeing per day and have you monetized the site yet?

      Lasse - July 5, 2013

      hey fran!
yes it is exact matches – at the moment when google-dancing around between #5 and #2 (funnily depends which browser i am googling with) i get around 40 visitors per day. i’ll se how it goes when it gets a bit more settled.
monetizing is on already (amazon) – and yesterday i’ve earned my first 4€ with it – yipieh!
well i’ll see whats going to happen the next weeks

      cheers 😉

    Tung Tran - July 6, 2013

That’s awesome Lasse 😀 Keep up your good work

Bas - July 5, 2013

Didn’t you get too many backlinks in a short time for your dumbbells site?
Maybe google noticed this and did give you a penalty

Fran - July 5, 2013

Hi Tung,

Penguin 2 hit 2 of my small business site pretty hard too. We’re still ranking for some terms but most terms were hit hard. I can’t get my head around it at all. I did have more exact keyword matches than is probably advisable so I’ve tried diversifying with a bunch of wiki links but its not really made any difference. I’ve had some guest posts written and posted on good sites and built second tier links to them, still no joy.

It’s worth pointing out that some of my competitors who for some services have jumped up for certain terms despite having next to no links and not having great on page seo? The only think I can put this down to is a forum post on a big industry website about 6 months previous. Someone had asked for advice on where to find a supplier and the editor of the site posted a reply with links to a lot of my competitors. The title of the forum post was my keyword and I’m pretty sure this is what has given them the boost. Although they were in a forum post the links were do follow.

It does show that one natural link from authority sites can give you a good boost even without any other seo efforts.

Chris - July 5, 2013

Hi Tung,

Well, I’m no SEO expert either, so I don’t know how valuable my opinion would be, but I’ll give it anyway 😛

If your niche site is getting slapped down by Google, it’s probably for one of these two reasons:

1. poor on-site quality or
2. a link profile that looks unnatural.

It seemed to me that your content was pretty good, so I would think it’s the links. I sure hope I’m wrong, because I went out and got the same link package you used from BHW :/

Ah well, we’ll find out soon enough. If my niche site tanks too, then we’ll know. That would probably confirm that the problem is the links, since my content is pretty good and my visitors tend to browse several pages before leaving.

Anyways, that’s good that you got to enjoy some vacation time with family and friends. Happy belated birthday, by the way!

But now it’s time to get back to work! 🙂

Aloha, Chris

Matt - July 5, 2013

Thanks for sharing Tung. My site too was hit on June 5 like yours. I’m still #1 for main keyword but the rest went wayyyy down in the rankings. If it was a penalty then why not hit the homepage???

Sometimes Google makes us confused.

PrIyAnGsHu - July 5, 2013

Your Amazing Associates’ earnings has been decreased significantly as compared to the previous month. Why so? And yeah, good to see your affiliate income growing :). Best of luck for the next month.

Jon Haver - July 5, 2013

Tung, when you were telling me about your site being penalized I was picturing it being crushed…but overall thats not too bad. If before you started the adjustable dumbell site you knew your were going to be making what you are now would you have? I think the answer is probably yes. So thats the good news…but I can definitely sympathize with seeing your site hit like that it always sucks. Best of luck recovering it!

Theodore Nwangene - July 5, 2013

Hey buddy,
Bravo, I’m really happy for your progress so far and, Happy Birthday in alliance. I sent you a birthday message on Facebook, don’t know if you saw it.

I’m still setting up my second niche site following Pat’s NSD2.0 and, I’m going to see how it goes.

Thanks a lot for sharing.

Anisul@ NicheSitesSecrets - July 6, 2013

Sorry to hear your ranking drop. Hope the PR links will bring back the original ranking. Btw, what’s your experience with burst vps? What purpose do you use it? What’s the PR breakdown for the cost of $217?

Arbaz Khan - July 6, 2013

Hey Tung,
I really like the way you share everything that happens with your niche site. I am no expert at this, as I too am trying to figure the same thing out.
But I am sure you will find a proper solution and share it with us.
Hoping for the best 🙂

corey - July 6, 2013

hum same thing happened to me went from 700 visitors a day to 40 visitors
i was in position 5 to 2 for most of my keywords but now page 3
so i bought a new domain and started over
if you knew why and how to avoid this please let me know

Mike - July 6, 2013

Hey Tung no offense but I believe the reason why your long tail traffic has tanked is because a lot of your content is regurgitated. I don’t know if google can detect that but a lot of your posts say the same thing but with different words. You could try to create content around dumbbell related topics such as “proper bicep curl form” and so on. Google looks out for industry jargon so if the reach of your content was bigger I’m sure you could get the long tail traffic back. Best of luck next month!

    Tung Tran - July 6, 2013

    Can u give some examples?

      Mike - July 7, 2013

Sure, look at the last 2 posts on your site for example. Both are geared toward a single topic of choosing the best adjustable dumbbells. In both articles you refer to branded vs non branded, cost vs budget, how much weight vs weight adjustments when these have already been discussed about on several of the other posts. I know google can detect synonyms pretty well and I thought that may be playing a roll in the drop of long tail traffic.

Marc - July 8, 2013

Could it be the competition for adjustable dumbells is mostly strong sites like Sears, Walmart etc?

Iain - July 8, 2013

Hey Tung,

Sorry to hear that your site was hit.

I wonder if it’s the linkbuilding you did, but it would hit the main keyword too as opposed to just the secondary stuff.

Let me know if you figure it out.

Niel - July 9, 2013

Hi Tung,

What backlinks service do you use? You posted somewhere in this blog but I can’t find it. Are they reliable? Is that the only service you used for ranking this website?

Joe - July 9, 2013

I think the same thing happened to Spencer’s knife site. He’s still ranking well in the ‘best survival knife’ keyword but he used to be up there also in the ‘survival knife’, now he’s not in the top 10 either.

Maybe google’s doing something about these types of sites?

Norm - July 9, 2013

Hi Tung,

I recommend you should start to scale your project, as It looks like you already have a winning formula apart from (google tanking recently but that happens all the time, up and down like a yoyo) . Maybe build another 5 or 10 niche sites, that should be able to help your bottom line.

I learnt long time ago, once you get some kind of consistent money making system, you should start scaling it larger and reap as much as you can.

Matthew Woodward - July 15, 2013

Thanks for the mention 🙂

I’m wondering if I can live on the road for all of 2014, thinking about it 🙂

Jason - July 22, 2013

Enjoy following your posts! Since following Spencer and yourself, my 3rd niche site attempt has finally made over $100 in the last 3 weeks. Your bestadjustabledumbbells case study was really helpful!
Thank you!

Shon Thriva - July 23, 2013

Looks like your site recovered alot of its rankings. Are you seeing your traffic spike back up?

jetpilot - July 25, 2013

Thanks for sharing your success with us.
It all helps.

[…] A newcomer to the roundup but a regular reader and commenter, Tung is doing a great job! […]

James - July 29, 2013

I was in the exact same situation when my site was hit during the first roll out of Penguin 2.0. The recent refresh brought the site back up. Here are what I think that got my site out of the hole:

1. I build a lot more generic, branded anchor text. Not just some random web 2.0, comment or similar stuff. I did guest post, high pr blog post with naked anchor text.
2. Build more links to inner pages, again with a lot of generic anchor text.

I took a look at your link profile, anchor text diversification could be the culprit here. You might want to break down all the links and check the anchor text ratio for each page that you built links to.

Btw, I’m a fellow Vietnamese. Glad I stumbled upon your blog.

    Tung Tran - July 29, 2013

My site got recovered as well 😀 I did virtually nothing so I think the last update was a mistake from Google hehe.

Joe the Content Writer - July 30, 2013

Glad your site has regained its rankings!

Are earnings up?

Floris - August 5, 2013

Really looking forward to your update of this month. When are you planning to publish it? 😉
