My 1st Monthly Income & Traffic Report – April 2013

income reportWelcome to my very first monthly income & traffic report! I’m super excited!

Each month I will be publishing a detailed report that tells you what I’ve done and lessons learned during the previous month. I will transparently show you how my online business is progressing including my income, expenses and traffic throughout my websites.

Actually I was inspired by 2 people Pat Flynn at SmartPassiveIncome by his popular income report series and Matthew Woodward at There are four main reasons that make me do this:

  1. To help me keep track of my own progress.
  2. To push myself to see improvements month after month.
  3. To lead by example by sharing both my wins and failures.
  4. To inspire other people.

Ok. Let’s get straight into this month’s report.

Important Going-Ons In April

April 2013 is the first month of me being a full-time entrepreneur after dropping out of college in March. It seemed like a crazy idea because I had no backup plan but I was pretty confident on my future due to some successes in the past. I was running out of my savingw (from last year) so I had to get serious and focus more on my online business.

My Niche Website Project

Started in February 2013, the main goal of this public niche website project is to inspire people and encourage them to take action on the very first steps to build their own online business. I’m glad to experience both failure and success in this project as I firmly believe that failure is a good teacher and a good sign of a coming success.

After learning some big lessons from the failure of my first niche site, I went ahead and built my 2nd niche website which ranked #1 in Google and Made $93.32 $112.21 in April. Not bad for the first month of a brand new niche site. It is getting over 170 visitors a day and on track to achieve #1 ranking for a secondary keyword which gets 8,100 local searches per month. The potential is huge here!

If you are inspired and want to start your first niche website today, here is the list of useful articles I’ve written:

Cloud Living Journey

I wrote 2 posts for Cloud Living Journey this month, which are pretty welcomed by the audience. Case-study article seems to get the most attention from people as we all want to learn the real and practical information, not the boring theory. People are quite active in those posts and I received many questions which is great because it shows that people truly care about what I’m sharing here in this blog. Join the discussion now:

Keyword Research/SEO Service

As building niche website is a long term business, I don’t expect it to be able to support my living in a couple of months so I have to create something that can generate fast cash to help me pay my bills. Freelance writing is quite a hot job right now but it’s not suitable for me at this time because I’m not a native speaker and it takes me 3-4 hours to write a high quality post and I don’t want to spend my whole day writing articles.

My ideal job should be the one that 1) I love to do and 2) I do very well. That’s why I came up with the idea of making a keyword research service at Warrior Forum. It costs only $20 bucks to open a thread and I can start accepting new order right away.

Here is my sale thread if you want to check it out: [Ranked in page ONE and Made $71.60 in 14 days] Premium Keyword Research Service That REALLY Works!

I also partnered up with an SEO provider in Black Hat World to provide SEO service to both local businesses and international businesses. There are many great services at BHW that provide amazing results at very cheap prices. They are worth more than that! The fact is people are paying much more for SEO agencies with no or very slow results so they may be interested in my SEO service as long as I can provide promising result for their businesses. The best part is I only have to do the marketing part to get new clients and the SEO provider handles the rest.

Okay, it’s time for numbers…

Crunching The Numbers

Let’s look at the traffic stats first.

Visitor Statistics

Honestly I didn’t heavily focus on traffic generation for Cloud Living Journey this month and the traffic was mainly through blog comments on related blogs and mentions from social media.

As you can see, the blog got 777 (26/day) visitors last month which wasn’t a big figure. But I’m very happy with the other stats:

  • Time on site – 4:38 – People were spending time reading my articles. Great!
  • Bounce Rate – 48.86% – I won Matthew at this haha – Read his report here (He’s my favorite blogger and his blog is great)

Most Popular Content

As I told you in the beginning, the article about How I Built A Niche Site That Ranked #1 in Google and Made $93.32 in 38 days is performing well and people are very active there so it’s obvious the most popular content on my blog.

The second runner is my 3000-word article about keyword research, it’s something that can be called “epic shit” as described by Cobertt Barr at ThinkTraffic.

Top Traffic Sources

This is the most interesting part as I have to give a big thank you to Spencer Haws at Nichepursuits. I bet that the majority of you guys who are reading this blog post come from NichePursuits. Am I right? 😀

Yes I’m a guy who often leaves many long comments on every new update made by Spencer =) Because we are talking about the same topic (building niche website), the referral traffic from his blog spent over 7 minutes on my blog reading articles. Pretty good! Thank you Spencer again if you are reading this.

I also noticed that WarriorForum and AuthorityWebsiteIncome (Thank Jon for mentioning me on your blog post) sent me quite a high quality traffic as they was spending a great amount of time digging through my blog.

Google also contributed a nice amount of visitors but almost are showed as “not provided” so I could not know what keyword drove the most traffic. Read more about  it here: How to Unlock Your ‘Not Provided’ Keywords in Google Analytics.

These numbers are quite important to me. They are the signs showing how good my content is that make people want to follow me and my blog. I’m grateful for

each new subscriber I get. Thank you all for joining my journey! Ok, Here are  the numbers:

If you like my blog but haven’t subscribed, do it now! I will only send you cool and valuable stuffs. Promise!

Here comes the number you really want to see:

Also, please note that these are figures from reports from each individual company for the previous month. It does not necessarily reflect the actual payment which, for some of the companies listed below, comes 30 to 60 days later because of potential refunds.

  • Total Expenses for April: $1110.38
  • Net Total in April: $429.49

Not bad for the first monthly report, right?

One thing you may notice is that my expenses are very high which results in lower net income. I spent most of my money on SEO and content creation for other niche sites that I don’t publicly share here so hopefully in a couple of months they will start generating traffic and money so that I can get a good ROI. It’s a long term business so I have to invest money to make money (ok.. I confess that I have overspent a little bit :P).

Final Thought

Honestly right now, I don’t have any idea to write in this section :P.

That’s my first monthly report and it took me a whole day to complete this detailed article including the accounting. It’s time consuming, but really worth it.

Well, I’ve written enough for today! I would like to personally thank each and every one of you for joining me on this journey. Without your support, I would not be writing this article. I wish you all the best!
