My 1st Monthly Income & Traffic Report – April 2013

income reportWelcome to my very first monthly income & traffic report! I’m super excited!

Each month I will be publishing a detailed report that tells you what I’ve done and lessons learned during the previous month. I will transparently show you how my online business is progressing including my income, expenses and traffic throughout my websites.

Actually I was inspired by 2 people Pat Flynn at SmartPassiveIncome by his popular income report series and Matthew Woodward at There are four main reasons that make me do this:

  1. To help me keep track of my own progress.
  2. To push myself to see improvements month after month.
  3. To lead by example by sharing both my wins and failures.
  4. To inspire other people.

Ok. Let’s get straight into this month’s report.

Important Going-Ons In April

April 2013 is the first month of me being a full-time entrepreneur after dropping out of college in March. It seemed like a crazy idea because I had no backup plan but I was pretty confident on my future due to some successes in the past. I was running out of my savingw (from last year) so I had to get serious and focus more on my online business.

My Niche Website Project

Started in February 2013, the main goal of this public niche website project is to inspire people and encourage them to take action on the very first steps to build their own online business. I’m glad to experience both failure and success in this project as I firmly believe that failure is a good teacher and a good sign of a coming success.

After learning some big lessons from the failure of my first niche site, I went ahead and built my 2nd niche website which ranked #1 in Google and Made $93.32 $112.21 in April. Not bad for the first month of a brand new niche site. It is getting over 170 visitors a day and on track to achieve #1 ranking for a secondary keyword which gets 8,100 local searches per month. The potential is huge here!

If you are inspired and want to start your first niche website today, here is the list of useful articles I’ve written:

Cloud Living Journey

I wrote 2 posts for Cloud Living Journey this month, which are pretty welcomed by the audience. Case-study article seems to get the most attention from people as we all want to learn the real and practical information, not the boring theory. People are quite active in those posts and I received many questions which is great because it shows that people truly care about what I’m sharing here in this blog. Join the discussion now:

Keyword Research/SEO Service

As building niche website is a long term business, I don’t expect it to be able to support my living in a couple of months so I have to create something that can generate fast cash to help me pay my bills. Freelance writing is quite a hot job right now but it’s not suitable for me at this time because I’m not a native speaker and it takes me 3-4 hours to write a high quality post and I don’t want to spend my whole day writing articles.

My ideal job should be the one that 1) I love to do and 2) I do very well. That’s why I came up with the idea of making a keyword research service at Warrior Forum. It costs only $20 bucks to open a thread and I can start accepting new order right away.

Here is my sale thread if you want to check it out: [Ranked in page ONE and Made $71.60 in 14 days] Premium Keyword Research Service That REALLY Works!

I also partnered up with an SEO provider in Black Hat World to provide SEO service to both local businesses and international businesses. There are many great services at BHW that provide amazing results at very cheap prices. They are worth more than that! The fact is people are paying much more for SEO agencies with no or very slow results so they may be interested in my SEO service as long as I can provide promising result for their businesses. The best part is I only have to do the marketing part to get new clients and the SEO provider handles the rest.

Okay, it’s time for numbers…

Crunching The Numbers

Let’s look at the traffic stats first.

Visitor Statistics

Honestly I didn’t heavily focus on traffic generation for Cloud Living Journey this month and the traffic was mainly through blog comments on related blogs and mentions from social media.

Screen Shot 2013-05-02 at 10.34.33 AM

As you can see, the blog got 777 (26/day) visitors last month which wasn’t a big figure. But I’m very happy with the other stats:

  • Time on site – 4:38 – People were spending time reading my articles. Great!
  • Bounce Rate – 48.86% – I won Matthew at this haha – Read his report here (He’s my favorite blogger and his blog is great)

Most Popular Content

As I told you in the beginning, the article about How I Built A Niche Site That Ranked #1 in Google and Made $93.32 in 38 days is performing well and people are very active there so it’s obvious the most popular content on my blog.

The second runner is my 3000-word article about keyword research, it’s something that can be called “epic shit” as described by Cobertt Barr at ThinkTraffic.

Top Traffic Sources

This is the most interesting part as I have to give a big thank you to Spencer Haws at Nichepursuits. I bet that the majority of you guys who are reading this blog post come from NichePursuits. Am I right? 😀

Yes I’m a guy who often leaves many long comments on every new update made by Spencer =) Because we are talking about the same topic (building niche website), the referral traffic from his blog spent over 7 minutes on my blog reading articles. Pretty good! Thank you Spencer again if you are reading this.

I also noticed that WarriorForum and AuthorityWebsiteIncome (Thank Jon for mentioning me on your blog post) sent me quite a high quality traffic as they was spending a great amount of time digging through my blog.

Google also contributed a nice amount of visitors but almost are showed as “not provided” so I could not know what keyword drove the most traffic. Read more about  it here: How to Unlock Your ‘Not Provided’ Keywords in Google Analytics.

These numbers are quite important to me. They are the signs showing how good my content is that make people want to follow me and my blog. I’m grateful for

each new subscriber I get. Thank you all for joining my journey! Ok, Here are  the numbers:

If you like my blog but haven’t subscribed, do it now! I will only send you cool and valuable stuffs. Promise!

Here comes the number you really want to see:

Income Breakdown

Disclosure: many of the links below are affiliate links that will earn me a commission if you purchase through them. If you do, I absolutely appreciate it and if you have any questions about any of the products or services please let me know!

Also, please note that these are figures from reports from each individual company for the previous month. It does not necessarily reflect the actual payment which, for some of the companies listed below, comes 30 to 60 days later because of potential refunds.

    • Amazon Affiliate: $112.21
  • Affiliate Earnings (mostly from Cloud Living Journey):
  • Service:
    • Keyword Research Service: $719.24
    • SEO Service (coming soon): $200
    • Writing Service (coming soon): $124.3
  • Others: $293.56
  • Gross total in April: $1,539.87
  • April Expenses (Below is what was paid last month. It does not include pro-rated yearly fees. Most are related to new projects under development):
  • Domain Renewals and Payments: $66.71
  • Long Tail Pro Subscription: $12
  • Fiverr: $10
  • Odesk: $37.44
  • (Online Rank Traker): $10
  • (I switched from $9.95
  • VPS Renewal: $25.9
  • Warrior Thread Open and Bump Fees: $260
  • Warrior Forum Membership: $10
  • Captcha (DeathByCaptcha): $6.95
  • Ahrefs: $30
  • Buy SEO (BlackHatWorld): $367.5
  • Proxies ( $10
  • Content Creation For Niche Site: $177.05
  • Westhost (My new hosting. quite good) – $71.88
  • Donation: $5
  • Total Expenses for April: $1110.38
  • Net Total in April: $429.49

Not bad for the first monthly report, right?

One thing you may notice is that my expenses are very high which results in lower net income. I spent most of my money on SEO and content creation for other niche sites that I don’t publicly share here so hopefully in a couple of months they will start generating traffic and money so that I can get a good ROI. It’s a long term business so I have to invest money to make money (ok.. I confess that I have overspent a little bit :P).

Final Thought

Honestly right now, I don’t have any idea to write in this section :P.

That’s my first monthly report and it took me a whole day to complete this detailed article including the accounting. It’s time consuming, but really worth it.

Well, I’ve written enough for today! I would like to personally thank each and every one of you for joining me on this journey. Without your support, I would not be writing this article. I wish you all the best!

Hey Tung,

This is inspiring one, really.

With higher investment, I only see you boosting you net income in coming months, with all the skills and expertise you have.

All the best for May 2013 Mate.

Danny Nguyen - May 3, 2013

Your first income really did a big kick start for long term success. Believe that you will do the best and keep moving forward, achieve more success or anything you want. Great Jobs 😀

Thanks 🙂

Kulwant Nagi - May 3, 2013

It’s great that you are being open for your audience.

You are going great so keep putting more efforts to multiply your income in coming months.

Winston - May 3, 2013

Great job!

Wanted to ask you about the Services portion of your income and the Keyword Research Service.

Is that your own service of you offering others keyword research or is that an affiliate?

Sudarto - May 3, 2013

I am happy reading your report. It can be as learning material for me in making successful in blogging. Your article is very complete so that it can add my insight.

Paul - May 3, 2013

quite nice report! Congratz! I think I should get into niche thing!

LA - May 4, 2013

Nice update as usual Tung!

I’ve noticed your Long Tail Pro subscription; is it the Platinum edition? If so, the price is $12 or $17/month?

Do you think the KC function in LTP Platinum is accurate enough to do Competition Analysis?

One cookie cutter question, do have any secret in Keyword Research Strategy of you WSO or you entirely base on your previous post of Keyword Research?

Anyways great post and great numbers within this time frame.

Good luck!

    Tung Tran - May 4, 2013

The normal price is $17/ month but I’ve subscribed at a promotion with discounted price so that’s $12/m.

I think it’s quite accurate but you should not completely rely on it. Check other factors as well.

No I dont have anything secret. I reveal everything on this blog

    Thank you 🙂

LA - May 4, 2013

Ah! I missed the promotion.

Mike - May 4, 2013

I see you’ve redesigned your niche site and it looks great! Where did you get your logo designed?

Jon Haver - May 5, 2013

Thanks for updating us on your progress!

Congrats on the great article that clearly launched a nice spike in traffic – #1 in Google so fast! It looks like you have hit a nerve with that and are continuing to leverage off that success. Well done and best of luck this month!

Ashley - May 7, 2013

How long are you keeping that service up I would love to buy some keywords in the near future. 🙂 And I am from Spencers blog and was looking throught the comments to find yours so I could check out your blog again.

John Shea - May 7, 2013

Hi Tung,

Very impressive results for such a new site. I am going to subscribe to your mailing list, and I’m ordering the platinum package from you for KW research. That has been my “hold up” for really getting started, I can do WordPress, articles, SEO etc. but am brand new to KW research so it’s exactly what I need to get started with my first niche site.

I will also be sending you an e-mail as I have an interview opportunity for you 🙂

    Tung Tran - May 7, 2013

Thank you John :). My niche site performs very well in May and I will keep you guys updated with the progress.
Thanks for the order :). I’m working on it.

Winston - May 10, 2013

I wanted to ask you, when publishing posts, do you put the all out at the same time so your site will have content, or did you slowly make the posts 1 per day, over 2 weeks, etc.?

Would be great to know what pace would be effective.

Joe - May 14, 2013

Great work!

What do you use to track your Google ranking?

Also, when do you begin making backlinks or outsourcing the backlinking, is it right after you put content or do you wait for a few weeks?

Eric - May 14, 2013

Keyword “Adjustable dumbells” is at 1st place. Congratulation, man! 8100 local search is great 🙂

    Tung Tran - May 14, 2013

    Thank you 🙂

But according to my… it’s still #2 😀 I just have to put a little more efforts to outrank Amazon

Joe - May 14, 2013

I have 2 questions:

1. what methods do you use when doing backlinking and how do you go about it?

2. do you just make niche sites for amazon or do you find other affiliates? If so how do you find those products?

Looks like we’re going to see a good May report!

Schumy - May 15, 2013

I noticed you use a new theme for your niche website? May I know what it is?

Winston - May 15, 2013

I read your comment over at Niche Pursuits (Spencer’s blog) saying that you find 5 page sites still rank well.

When you do these smaller sites, what kind of format do you use, 1 longer homepage, then 4 individual product reviews?

Also is the keyword research different to when making bigger sites (like lower KW searches, etc)?

    Tung Tran - May 15, 2013

Yes, i have 5 pages site ranking well now 🙂 I always start a site with few pages and will increase if I see positive performance.
The keyword research is the same for all kind of sites.

      Winston - May 15, 2013

Wow you really know your stuff!

Sorry I wasn’t clear about the question. When making 5 page sites, what format do you use?

Is it one long homepage, then 4 individual product reviews that make up the 5 pages?

Trị - May 17, 2013

Nice income report Tung Tran. It makes me crazy. I really really do admire you! I Hope to see more numbers in your next reports

Lazy American - May 17, 2013

I’m one of those folks coming over from Niche Pursuits. Looks like a pretty cool blog you got going here and I’m gonna take a look at some of your posts. Can always learn something from reading other peoples techniques.

Seems like you got a lot of expenses but I guess if the income keeps going up it’ll be worth it in the long run.

Joe Can Write - May 19, 2013

Another great post and some excellent earnings there.

I will check out your keyword service as I’m going to start a new niche site soon.

Good luck with next month.

Jon @ - May 20, 2013

I too have been using Spencers info to build a couple if niche sites that I have. I have been improving them little by little. I found you through Spencer and I am glad I did. Would like to see more on your niche site case study. Love the April income report. thanks

Ehsan - May 20, 2013

Hey Tung, It’s my first visit here – like what I see so far. Thanks for Spencer of NichePursuits for sending me this way.

I’m seeing your niche blog on the first page of Google with the keyword “Adjustable Dumbbells” as well which has 12,000 exact monthly searches.

I’d appreciate you writing a new post, or just let me know in short about how you did build links for that niche website of yours, and what link building strategies did you use? Did you buy any link building service, or you did everything yourself?

Looking forward to your reply,

Richard Smith - May 20, 2013

I like the look of your dumbbells site. If you don’t mind sharing, how did you add that survey at the beginning that helps visitors find the best product? Also, what plugin creates that comparison chart? Awesome blog by the way!

Ehsan - May 21, 2013

Tung, I have few more questions!

Are you satisfied with the results of SHERLOCK HACKS GOOGLE? Which package did you buy? The Lion’s Mane? Can I buy that If I’m not a member of the BlackHat forum?

    Tung Tran - May 21, 2013

I bought over 5 packages from him. Completely satisfied! Yes I bought the Lion’s mane with discount coupon. yes you definitely can 😀

Joe - May 24, 2013

I was just having a look at your sales thread on WF.

How much would charge to find a 5000 exact match keyword that matches the other criteria?

Joe - May 27, 2013

How is the new niche site doing in May?

I just mentioned your service on my latest blog post.

Good luck for this month!

Tyler - May 30, 2013

Haha I was on your adjustable dumbells site a few days ago looking for different reviews. I remember thinking this site is well done, they must follow Spencer in some way. Good job!

Nguyen Ha - August 12, 2013

Your income do I have great admiration.
