My Monthly Income & Traffic Report – July 2013

income-report (1)

Welcome to my July monthly income & traffic report!

Each month I will be publishing a detailed report that tells you what I’ve done and lessons learned during the previous month. I will transparently show you how my online business is progressing including my income, expenses and traffic throughout my websites.

There are four main reasons that make me do this:

  1. To help me keep track of my own progress.
  2. To push myself to see improvements month after month.
  3. To lead by example by sharing both my wins and failures.
  4. To inspire other people.

Ok. Let’s get straight into this month’s report.

Important Going-Ons In July

I didn’t put much of my efforts on the blog this month as I was busy testing and developing my own SEO blueprint which can be used for all my niche websites. It is basically based on the same princple of tiered link building with a few tweaks to simplify the process. I will tell you more on that later.

I was featured on Income Report Roundup – July 2013 by MatthewWoodward. Look at #10 and you’ll see me :D.

Finally, I was able to rank #1 for my name (Google “Tung Tran”). It’s great because I noticed some visitors coming from search engines through this search term. People are searching for my name on Google!

I also upgraded to Genesis Framework 2.0 RC2 version. You’re seeing the default theme. It’s pretty clean and enough for my needs. It will just take some customizations to be perfect for me.

To improve the loading speed and security of CLJ, I moved my blog from Hostgator to WPengine which is by far the best managed hosting I’ve ever used. My niche websites still remain on Hostgator and Westhost.

Niche Website Project

I have a good news.

My niche website got recovered. All the ranking was back. That was awesome!

How did it happen? What did I do?

Well, I added some articles, built some high PR links and even bought this Google Penalty Removal service

But I don’t think that’s the reason for the recovery.

I’m 99% sure that was the result of a small panda update rolling out on July 18 which was more “finely targeted”. You can check out this post on Searchengineland for more information.

As a result of the recovery, the earning from the site was back to normal. It’s generating $30-$50 a day on average now.

My plan for the site for now is :

  • Pre create 30 more articles and then scheduling at the rate of 1 per day.
  • Swapping link from my high PR blog network with some members on the Source Infinitum community to maintain and even boost the ranking of the site.
  • Buy one more link building package.

Cloud Living Journey

I was only able to write 2 new articles this month for CLJ:

Crunching The Numbers

There was a slight increase in traffic, from 142/day to 163/day. Overall, everything was good :D.

Also, please note that these are figures from reports from each individual company for the previous month. It does not necessarily reflect the actual payment which, for some of the companies listed below, comes 30 to 60 days later because of potential refunds.

  • July Expenses: (Below is what was paid last month. It does not include pro-rated yearly fees. Most are related to new projects under development):
  • Odesk: $91.11
  • Long Tail Pro: $12
  • Namecheap: $41.24
  • Blackhatlinks.com: $13.38
  • Other: $63
  • Proxies: $10
  • VPS: $12.95
  • webwriterangel.com: $60
  • CrorkService: $147
  • Fiverr.com: $10
  • Wordai.com: $24.5
  • Content Writer: $72.65
  • SEOhost.com: $9.95
  • Serpbook: $9.95
  • Total Expenses For July: $577.73
  • Net Total In July: $575.62
  • Net Total Previous Month: $1080.78

2 month of income drop in a row :( But this month (July), I will have a significant increase in income because my biggest earner was back and I have lots of new plans for July.

Final Thought

Writing monthly report is really boring lol

Hi Tuan,

Good stuff, proud of what you are achieving. Take the positives from it and keep building and perfecting it.

From as long I have been in business money goes up and down all the time. It aint like a salary that always stay constant.

I had one of projects hit a snag in March, end up losing about 20% in revenue but I ignored it and kept working and now I hitting record levels again! The key is looking for solutions and never giving up.

What happened to your blog? Did you remove some articles?

      Yes I started again.

I just didnt like the way the direction the blog was heading and really wanted to do something different.

So I am taking more time to write before I publish anything.

Also I have been concentrating on various projects and trying new things like auto blogs (which has surprised me on how well it actually works, making 4 figures per month now)

Like the saying goes “Just do It” dont listen to anyone whether it works or not, do it and you will find out.

Tung,
It seems that you are living dangerously. I mean so many have copied your niche and almost eight of the top ten results are niche sites. This has proved that niche sites are well and truly alive. But since you were the first and original, you’ve been deservedly ranked number one. Congrats again for this success. I’m also trying to achieve something similar like this.

Hi Tung,

I like how you do your income reports. I especially like that you break down your expenses for services, so we can check out what you’re using. I’m just now preparing to do my very first income report on my blog (well it’s mostly going to be expenses, but I’ve been at it for less then a month).

I see you’re using a VPS, is it HostStage? I pay 12.95 for a VPS with them that lets me run stuff like GSA-SER and WikiRobot.

I see you’re using quite a few article writing services. Which one do you like the best? I’m searching for one at the moment and was looking at Elance, but I don’t really know what I’m doing yet :)

Anyway, great job and keep it up!

    No I used Burst.net 😀 2nd plan

    But I’ve just switched to a new VPS which costs $35/month. It’s my friend’s service >>> http://seovms.com/

I’ve some private contractors hired from Odesk but now I’ve just hired my first full time writer for $300 per month :D.

If you’re interested, shoot me an email and I can provide your content need at an affordable price :D… just to cover the cost of my VA

      Goran - August 7, 2013

I was looking at Burst.NET, but they explicitly say you can’t use GSA-SER, so I didn’t go with them. It’s a shame because for the money they do have better VMs.

Your friend’s service looks awesome, I’ll be sure to look at it when my current VPS is just not enough (which might be quite soon).

Thanks for the offer, I’ll think about it, but I still have to figure out some stuff about the site I plan to buy articles for :)

I have liked following your progress and found this site from Woodward’s blog.

Good stuff!

I noticed that so many people now are posting niche site journeys on their IM blogs.I have been launching a few every month so I may need to make a post on one of them.

Also, noticed your web host rankings in a niche that I used to partake in, good luck, the competition gets fierce near the top.

Hi Tung,

Small mistake in the 1st para – it should say “Welcome to my July monthly income & traffic report!” – right now it says June

Great report overall, waiting eagerly to see if you break the $1000 mark again with Amazon in August now that your site is back in the rankings.

I’m aiming for $300 this month myself – currently documenting me journey on my blog :)

Anyway, I like you’re sharing links for all the services that work for you, and this proves you’re walking the talk.

My new niche site made $50 last month, and traffic is actually higher this month, but I’m making less sales — maybe $10 right now. At least I’m making something though. Better than what I was earning a few months ago (which was practically nothing).

I don’t know what’s the next step for that site. I guess I should buy more links and try to rank higher.

Would you care to share which other link building services you’ve tried with success. I just tried Sherlock and it doesn’t look too good. My site started around 12, it went up to 9 but now it’s above 50. He’s still not finished but it sure looks like it harmed my site rather than helped. I also noticed that it had a difficult time climbing from 12 to 9 before tanking.

Here’s a follow up. I’ve heard a lot of people mention dance. From your experience how long do the ‘dances’ take? (FYI, Sherlock’s on day 13 or 14 now, I think I did see it dance early to 60 or so during day 3 or 4 then went up before going down again this time).

From what I’ve seen in my sites, when they go they don’t really come back unless you change/fix something or Google makes an update. Hopefully you’re right.

        Tung Tran - August 23, 2013

just wait for more 10 15 days and make a conclusion :) if they dont come back, analyze your site… it’s not only the backlinks that make Google penalizes your site. I dont think Sherlock is the cause as it works wonder on my site 😀

Hey Tung!

I’m searching for a link building service for my niche site. I’m trying follow the guildlines set by Spencer with NSP1 and your dumbbell site. I’ve set up the site back in May, but have only started adding posts 2 weeks ago. I would really like a service that starts slow and know how fast things should move along.

I’ve seen you using Sherlock and I see you mention Crork Service in this report. What do you think of them? Crork seems to be a very good service when looking through their feature list and seem to be a lot cheaper then LayeredLinks. Which do you think is the best to go with for a site that I want to go long-term with?

I would really appreciate your input on this.
Cheers, Goran

Reply
    Tung Tran - September 5, 2013

I never tried Crork but I think it would work ok as they are the best selling SEO service on Fiverr. Sherlock is still a good service but I don’t use it anymore as I’m moving into building my own tier 1 network as controling your tier 1 links is the best method to keep track of what you’re doing with your sites.

If you choose the keyword right, I think you should go with manually web 2.0 and some high PR blog posts and then build the tier 2 using GSA. IT works 😀

      Goran - September 5, 2013

You should really do a post about this. Building your own T1 is in my plan as well, but I’m first testing the waters with one site.

Tell me, are you building a relevant T1 network or is it a general one? What I mean by that is will you have this T1 pointed at multiple sites in the same niche, but different mini/micro niches? I heard those types are the most effective, because not only do you get high-value backlinks to you money sites, those backlinks are also relevant to them, so Google may rank you higher or faster.

BTW, have you hear about RankWyz? A friend recommended it but I haven’t yet had time to really wrap my mind around it and find out what they actually do.

      Cheers, Goran

        Tung Tran - September 5, 2013

I used to have a general blog network but now I’m moving toward the relevant one which I found out that it’s more effective when it comes to rank a site. That’s why I’m shifting into promoting health related products so my blog network will be relevant to any new site 😀

About Rankwyz, I didn’t tried it much but I’m using FCS Networker which is pretty similar.

        The plan is simple:

Tier 1: 20-30 very high quality self-hosted wordpress sites with relevant content, curated content, video. I’m finding a way to keep it fresh all the time without spending a ton of content.
Tier 2: 500-1000 Relevant Web 2.0 using spun content from Kontent Machine
Tier 3: GSA at max speed 😀

I’m still testing this strategy though

        Reply
          Goran - September 5, 2013

Your strategy sounds good. I imagine you’re probably going to tweak it a bit with time, but it seems like a good place to start.

Do you buy relevant expired domains with high PR for T1?

For T2 I imagine you create content with KT machine and then use the FCS you mention to publish it on those web 2.0.

I imagine an initial cost for such a network is about $500 with domains, hosting and initial content, and then about $100/month to maintain? It’s just a wide guess, though.

          Cheers,
          Goran

Hi Tung,

Your income report is really inspiring me and give me some hope that you can also earn like Tung Tran do. Many Congratulations! on your successful sale of bestadjustabledumbbells.org on Flippa.

I have few questions,

1. Which backlinks packages do you mostly use from this site blackhatlinks.com or which site is best for purchasing web 2.0 links or any kind of backlinks. My main keyword is on number 7 and I already use high pr blog network what else I use for ranking it up.

2. Can you provide any backlink diagram or excel file which you use for making backlinks. I think backlinks is the most important point after choosing good keyword. It’s a suggestion if you write also a complete backlinks post that how you use backlinks then it can be helpful for us.

3. Does it matter if you have different niches on the same blogs

4. Some blogs don’t index in majesticseo, has he experienced that, if so is it to do with the domain or the hosting. I can’t work out why some links show up in majesticseo whilst others don’t.
