$10K Challenge Update #6

Welcome to the 6th update of my $10K Challenge. If this is your first time reading, check out what this challenge is all about here.

Below are the things that happened since the last update (May 2016):

Key Successes

  • Hit 100,000 visits a month.
  • Launched the Epic article and built 17 links to it.

Key Failures

  • Failed to start collecting emails.
  • Failed to optimize revenue.

Website Stats as of August 1st 2016

Domain Profile

I use Ahrefs (paid) and Open Site Explorer (free) to help measure the effectiveness of my promotional efforts by tracking these metrics:

  • Domain Rating: 42 (+1)
  • Domain Authority: 25 (-1)
  • Referring Domains: 106 (+21)
  • Organic Keywords: 27,000 (+7,000)

Traffic

Traffic has grown nicely since the last update and is at about 3,800 visits a day.

There’s not much to talk about here as my strategy is simply to post new contents consistently, at 3 times a week.

I’m going to keep this posting frequency for the next few months as it’s better to focus on optimizing current contents to maximize performance / revenue.

Income

May 2016

June 2016

July 2016

Amazon Affiliate Income

$3,300.83

$3,115.94

$2,657.53

Media.net Ads

$16.90

$133.03

Total Revenue

$3,300.83

$3,132.84

$2,790.56

I wasn’t able to optimize the revenue and it’s still at $3,000 on average. Income for July is a bit lower and it could be due to 2 reasons:

  1. Minor ranking changes for some of my best keywords.
  2. Summer is a low season for the health and beauty niche. Some of my friends noticed the same trend with their sites.

I also tested Media.net ads and earned about $150 in 2 months. But, I wasn’t happy with how the ads look on my site so I removed it.

Content & Promotion

My team and I published 26 new posts and gained 21+ new backlinks during this period.

We’ve launched the epic page (check it out here) and is currently promoting it quite heavily.

My SEO manager is doing an incredible job and this month alone, he has built 17 new links to it through manual outreach.

The page is moving up nicely for all the main keywords and I expect to get some decent traffic in just a couple of months.

Conclusion

That’s it for my 6th update. Here are what we’re gonna do over the upcoming months to grow the site to $10k/month:

  • Keep posting frequency at 3 posts a week.
  • Do conversion rate optimization for top performing articles.
  • Keep building new links to the epic page.
  • Focus on building an email list (can’t procrastinate on this anymore!)

If you have any question for me, feel free to leave a comment below or post in our Facebook community.

Love reading these reports. There seems to be a lot of negativity around still being able to make decent money building Amazon Affiliate sites.

However you have demonstrated that it’s still possible. I look forward to reading the updates each time you send them.

Tung, awesome work! You’ve inspired me to take the Amazon niche websites to a whole new level.

For anyone interested his Tung’s AMZ Affiliate Bootcamp course, this is not a paid advertisement nor do I receive any commissions (was is that Tung?)…. it’s an AWESOME course. I signed up reluctantly on the last day it was offered before due to all the previous Amazon affiliate courses that I paid for that were pure junk. But, I took the plunge anyways. Best money I ever spent. IF you can afford it, take it! You won’t be disappointed.

Keep these coming challenge updates coming, there a huge motivational tool for me. I’ve set a goal myself of reaching $10,000 by next August. Thanks for sharing and keep grinding!

Great journey & growth! If I may ask what kind of outreach method are you using for this epic post;like relevant blogger who posted about this topic & what kind of outreach template are you using for that?

Reply
Quinton - August 2, 2016

Kudos on getting the rankings up and seeing that growth! Incredible!

I think that SEO manager role is going to keep on being more and more key as you move forward. I’ve been thinking of appointing a similar position just to keep that steady stream of white-hat links coming in .

Reply
    Tung Tran - August 3, 2016

Thanks Quinton! Another note is that it’s so much easier to work with key members in person. I fly him out to Ho Chi Minh city to work for the whole month of August and we’ve been getting a lot of stuff done.

Hey Tung

Here is newbie question , can we target a keyword , which is now showing the first 10 links from amazon and minor ecommerce sites.

Thanks for your help

Reply
    Tung Tran - August 3, 2016

If you see more than 7 ecommerce sites in top 10, then I would stay away as the SERP seems to prefer ecommerce sites

Hello Tung,

Thank you for the amazing report. One question: How come you decided to go with Media.net rather than Adsense?

I used both networks before but Adsense still provide higher revenue for me.

Thanks

Hi Tung,

I’m pumped by your post on this update, that’s a lot of money for 3 months. I’d like to see more updates and content from you.

As you said earlier on your #3 update, basically you used the Blog Commenting to build relationship so that later you can ask for a Guest Posting, right?
And the same thing goes with the infographic, am I right?

Thank you very much 🙂

Hi Tung,

Wow, it’s impressive Challenge and I’m sute it put some pressure to you since you made it public 🙂

I’m wondering if you create your own product reviews? So uou bought the product and do some kind of testings?

I’m pursuing the same road as you’re but still far from my goal.

Appreciate your response
Roberta

Hello Tung,

I am just starting to follow your 10K challenge. I have a question in my mind. In this article you mentioned that, we need to post 3 times a week. Is it a must? Or can I post 1-2 times in a week. Is this for contents freshness only? By the way I have already started to like your writing 🙂

Reply
    Tung Tran - August 8, 2016

No not a must. In the first 6-8 months links are everything. Try to get 20 pages up and focus on acquiring links. You can up the post frequency later when you have good domain authority.

Hey Tung,

What plugin do you use for displaying table of contents in the sticky menu of your big acne post?

Hi Tung,

Do you happen to know the process of creating another Amazon account such as through an LLC? My account was banned a while back. Found your blog, read a few articles and would love to start making money with Amazon again but couldn’t find direct answers to creating a new account. Or am I pretty much screwed in terms of earning with Amazon at this point?

Anyone else who knows the answer, please feel free to chime in. Thanks in advance.

Hi Tung,

Previously you were using Geniuslink for localization . Now you are not using? Is there any specific reason?

Also i like to know if i use Geniuslink for localization , will it violate any Amazon TOS?

Are you paying for any guest posts for links back to Thank Your Skin or only doing outreach? If you are paying can you share some good places to buy guest posts from?

Reply
John - October 4, 2016

I know your team does outreach but if a blog owner won’t list your blog post unless you pay them will you do it? Or just skipping those with the ones who are free. Sometimes when I do outreach bloggers say there’s a sponsorship fee or fee to get listed

Reply
Mary - October 4, 2016

I was wondering what you use to write and create the text on your images on your blog posts, the featured image… sometimes it’s several images merged into one. Is that part of the focusblog theme or something you did on your own?

Also, I see you have been adding a lot of (acne) articles to your site but they don’t have product reviews. Can you share what the purpose is of adding articles if there aren’t links to Amazon etc?

Hi Tung,

This is my first time visiting your website and it looks really great. Just checked ThankYourSkin website and it’s impressive. The content is great and beautifully organized.

Are you using any content builder? If yes, then which one is it?

Just want to know would you like to reveal the domain age of the site you are struggling to earn 10k/month? Thanks again

Reply
    Tung Tran - October 13, 2016

I’m not struggling lol. It’s growing and it just takes time to grow. The site was started november 2014 but the domain seems to be 3-4 years old.
